Eddie Benitez Eddie Benitez was born in Puerto Rico and spent his early years in Europe where his father’s work had brought the family. Living in Europe provided Eddie with a remarkable teacher at a very young age when his father arranged for a year of private lessons from the renowned classical guitarist Andres Segovia. From that point on, Eddie was self-taught and developed his own, unmistakable style of guitar playing. Eddie’s family returned to the U.S. in the late 60s and settled in Brooklyn, New York., setting the stage for the start of Eddie’s extraordinary musical career. He formed his first band at 12 and began playing and winning Battles of the Band in Brooklyn. That got him noticed and signed with the premier Latin Jazz label, Fania Records. In the summer of 1976 Eddie was launched onto the world stage with his debut concert at Madison Square Garden in front of 20,000 fans as part of the Fania All Stars. He was just 14 years old. His first album Nightlife, was released that same year and promptly went gold. Another gold record followed with his second release, Essence of Life. Eddie was 15 years old with two gold records — winning recognition as an astonishing young talent. In 1983, Eddie signed with the innovative label, Island Records. He has performed with legendary stars such as “Father of Smooth Jazz”—George Benson, Barry White, Celia Cruz, Tito Puente, Mongo Santamaria and many others, throughout his career. Brilliance, Illness & Miracles — Though Eddie’s star rose early and quickly, in 1985, the unthinkable happened — his performing career ground to a sudden halt when at the age of 23 he was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma. The diagnosis was grim when Eddie experienced a miraculous and complete healing from the cancer. His recovery baffled the medical community, but Eddie himself is clear that it was a divine healing that occurred during a spiritual vision. This experience transformed Eddie’s life, and afterwards he took time off to reflect on life and spirituality. He returned to the music world and wrote music over the years for many dance acts in the mid-80s through the early 90s. Ultimately he returned to writing and performing his own music. With the 2008 release of Lovers Never Say Goodbye, Eddie is now enjoying the acclaim of a whole new generation of fans in addition to his long-time, loyal audience around the globe. From the Book "Angels on My Stage" Part 1: A legendary guitarist, his angels, spirits, music and miracles. A Child Lost in the Forest My earliest awareness was probably brought back to me by my mother, about 15 years ago. That’s when she disclosed to me that I disappeared in the forest near Atlanta, Georgia when I was about six years old. I didn’t remember it much at first, but now I recollect everything. We had come in from Europe where we were living because my father had to do some business in Atlanta for about two months. My father was a U.S. Marine, and he was head of the Embassy Guards at consulates in Europe. It was there in Georgia that I disappeared one day, into the wilderness. One morning I woke up and I felt compelled to go to the forest across the street on my own. I walked on a path until I came to an opening in the woods and there, five men appeared from the sky, just drifting down from above. They looked like your Moses type, Abraham, the way we picture them — old men with beautiful white robes. They would each place their hand on my head to talk to me, telepathically. I don’t remember much of what they were telling me. I realize now that I retained what they were telling my in my spirit. It felt weird to me but it also felt comforting. None of this seemed frightening or strange or me. I was a kid, I thought it was cool to see beings come down from the sky. They radiated love, so I never felt any fear, and I didn’t worry about being away from home. I lost all track of time. They told me they would put me inside of a cavern so that I wouldn’t be hurt. And the next thing you know I was in a cavern. That’s where I was when the police finally found me. They had been out for hours looking for me. Eventually I told my mother about the men, but not right then. She asked me later what happened to me out in the wilderness. I told the cops that day who it was that brought me there and what happened. My mother knew that much, but I didn’t disclose any in-depth details then. They didn’t know what to make of it. I had been missing about 8 hours. Everybody was looking for me. My father had gotten the FBI involved in the search, and he heard the stories about the men, but he didn’t react to it at all. He didn’t react to much, like I said before. A building could fall right next to him and he wouldn’t react to it. That was my pop. © Excerpted from Angels on My Stage, by Eddie Benitez and MaryEllen O’Brien.
